Evaluations FAQ

What makes JLM Psychological Services different from other evaluators?

Our team of clinicians have over 55 years of experience in public school education as mild/moderate and moderate/severe special education teachers, reading intervention teachers, response-to-intervention (RtI) consultants, behavioral specialists, school psychologists, program specialists, special education assistants, and one-on-one behavioral aides.

Our clinicians work together as a team to conduct your / your child's evaluation. All of those years of public-school experience and expertise are used collaboratively to conduct a comprehensive, tailored evaluation for you / your child.

You can expect a thoroughly analyzed review of your / your child's assessment data and learning profile through the lens of our multifaceted experience as educators and specialists in our fields. We provide educational service recommendations, conclusive statements regarding special education eligibility, tailored treatment plans with regards to the whole-child as well as clinical diagnoses that you may share with your / your child's medical providers to seek out private therapies.

We are excited to work with you and your family!

What is a psychoeducational evaluation?

A psychoeducational evaluation, sometimes referred to as special education evaluation, is an assessment that looks at various areas of your child's functioning including academic skills, cognitive and processing abilities, social skills, emotional and mental health,  behaviors, independence skills, fine / gross motor skills, and  language and communication skills to determine whether your child is eligible for special education services under California law.

Your child's evaluation and the areas that our clinicians evaluate will be tailored to your specific referral concerns. Our clinicians will work with you and your family to create an individualized, tailored assessment for your child.

A psychoeducational evaluation can be initiated either through your own private funding or through public-school funding which is called an Independent Educational Evaluation (IEE).

What is included in a psychoeducational evaluation by JLM Psychological Services?

Our comprehensive psychoeducational evaluations include: a parent / guardian interview, review of school and medical records, a school observation, one-on-one standardized testing sessions (typically 3 sessions for a total of 3-5 hours of testing), rating scales and questionnaires provided to parents / guardians and teacher(s), a written report with diagnostic impressions and recommendations, and a one-hour review of evaluation findings and recommendations with you. The results of our evaluations include clinical diagnoses, strategies for your family to implement in your home, recommendations for private therapies (if applicable),  and educational recommendations that may be used by the school district to determine necessary services for your child to fully benefit from their education including, but not limited to, the development of an Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) or Section 504 Plan.

As part of our evaluations, we provide educational and treatment recommendations as well as clinical diagnoses for disorders such as:

What is an Independent Educational Evaluation (IEE)?

At times, parents and school districts / agencies do not agree about a child's educational needs. When a second opinion is needed to help resolve the disagreement, we can provide an Independent Educational Evaluation (IEE).

An Independent Educational Evaluation (IEE) is a psychoeducational evaluation, sometimes called a special education evaluation, that is funded by your school district / agency as the result of a disagreement that you may have regarding the psychoeducational assessment results that were conducted by your school district / agency.

An IEE is an independent psychoeducational evaluation meant to be an unbiased "second opinion" for you and your child's school team to consider.

To obtain an IEE, your school district / agency will have needed to conduct their own school-based psychoeducational evaluation for your child. After a school-based psychoeducational evaluation is conducted and if you disagree with the results that your child's team presented to you, you may request an IEE by stating to the Individualized Education Program (IEP) team or submitting in writing that you would like to request an IEE. Your school district / agency will then provide you with a list of providers that you may choose from or you may elect your own provider to conduct the IEE.

What is an Individualized Education Program (IEP)?

An Individual Education Program (IEP) is both a program and written document provided to your child if they qualify for special education services. Your child can only qualify for an IEP if they have participated in a psychoeducational evaluation conducted by your school district / agency. Any member of your child's school team, including you or a school staff member, may request a psychoeducational evaluation at any time during your child's schooling. You may do this by putting your request in writing (detailing your specific concerns and that you would like your child to obtain a psychoeducational evaluation) and submitting it to your child's school team.  Consider this resource from Center for Parent Information & Resources
